The Cast Cork Chair is a project that was guided by its process. In the early stages of working with agglomerated materials such as cork, I was experimenting with process and looking for various ways of working with this material. Most often this material is compressed in a mold under great pressure, but this chair was made through a slightly different process that involved hand packing the material onto the walls of an open face mold.
A plywood box was made the held the held the geometry of this form as its negative, material is then mixed with a binder and hand packed onto the walls of the mold to create this form that holds the formal duality of sort of perfect molded edges, and rough, imperfect hand packing on the inside that shows the hand.
