The Hang Sconces are part of an ongoing collection of formally playful yet functional work that focuses on utilizing byproduct materials from subtractive manufacturing processes to make high fidelity, manufacturable pieces of lighting and furniture. These works act as proven use cases that seek to show that complex forms and processes such as multiple part molding, overmolding, and other processes thought to be exclusive to traditional injection molding and plastic based casting can be achieved with sustainable materials and processes given thoughtful manufacturing methods. The materials used in this collection such as wood chips, recycled rubber granulate and in this case, recycled cork granulate are often seen as being limited to being repurposed into simple, blockish forms. These works seek to push the limit on that perception, and to show that these materials are not waste, but material in their secondary form that can efficiently replace environmentally harmful materials such as plastics and resins.
