The loop chair uses the byproduct of its manufacturing as one of the main materials in its makeup. The chips and dust from the manufacturing process of the legs and backrest are saved and cast into the actual seat of the chair, making a chair where 100% of the material is valued.
This project is a part of my graduate thesis project "(By)Product" where one of the main goals was to develop ways of craft and precision in working with byproduct materials such as dust or scraps, and then create functional case studies that show these processes as able to exist in the world of high quality, producible, contemporary furniture.
The seat is molded using a 3D printed mold and can be efficiently and accurately reproduced- bringing this waste material out of a speculative design space and onto the same plane as other, traditional materials such as wood, metal or plastics.
